Choosing Taller De José to begin my social work career was the right choice, without a doubt. As an Intern Compañera at Taller de Jose, I have already gained a great deal of experience and noticed the impact Taller’s resources have on the community. In the beginning, I felt unprepared and nervous. But the Taller team has been very helpful. So far, I have seen many clients and have been able to help with many of their needs. A particular client warmed my heart. I accompanied her to take her naturalization test at USCIS, and I was her interpreter. This was my first time going to USCIS. It was such an amazing experience to be part of such an important moment in her life. As I talked to her on the way there, I felt less nervous because I got to know her as a person. I was very proud of her when she passed her test. She immediately hugged me, and seeing her smile as she said the words “Gracias, lo logré” (Thank you, I did it) made me realize how important our work at Taller de José is. On our way back, she called all her family members to tell them the good news, and she mentioned how grateful she was for my service. She told her son that I did a great job in assisting her and that I was very kind. Hearing those words from my client made me feel sure of myself to continue serving others. I will forever remember my client’s smile. I am proud of the work I have been able to do at Taller de José, and I am excited to continue contributing to its success.
