Compañeras and compañeros may not always get to work with the same individual. However, every person that walks through the doors of Taller de José is welcomed. I am grateful to be an intern of Taller de José because it is an amazing organization that focuses on serving others. Not only am I able to assist clients’ needs, but I can also physically accompany them to places. Every being that walks through the doors of Taller de José has had their own journey and I am fortunate to play a small part in it.
A client I have met a few times is Roberto*. He is an elderly individual who I learned has been coming to Taller de José since 2013. He shared with me that he is extremely grateful that organizations like Taller de José exist because “nos ayudan a los pobres” “you help us, the poor people”.
I first accompanied Roberto* to schedule an eye exam at a local clinic. In addition to scheduling his first appointment, we went to his eye exam, scheduled his surgery, and went to his follow up appointment. On the way there he shared many childhood stories, told me many jokes, and recited poetry that he composed himself.
It has been very rewarding to accompany Roberto* on his journey. I will never forget that every time we meet he tells me that he asks God to watch over me.
