This fall, our intern Compañeras received DV 101 training and an overview of legal advocacy services from our Community Partner, Sarah’s Inn. Sarah’s Inn provides free, confidential support for individuals who are victims and survivors of domestic violence. The training was led by Elvia, a Community Advocate with Sarah’s Inn, and Tere, the Legal Advocacy Program Supervisor. We are grateful to have Elvia at Taller de José every week to meet with clients and connect with the Gage Park community. Having Elvia onsite weekly allows clients to access support in a trusted environment, close to home, and in the language they are most comfortable with.
During the DV 101 session, Elvia shared important information about domestic violence, including that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 9 men experience abuse in their relationships. She walked our interns through the cycle of abuse, the many forms violence can take, and how to be present and supportive when someone is experiencing harm.
Our interns also learned about Sarah’s Inn’s services—such as their 24-hour crisis line, counseling and support groups, advocates, and legal support. Tere, helped the team better understand emergency orders of protection, what is required, and what to expect when accompanying someone to court.
Why This Training Matters
At Taller de José, accompaniment means walking alongside clients, especially during moments that feel overwhelming or unsafe. Understanding the signs of domestic violence and the resources available helps our interns respond with care, compassion, and clarity. This training equips them to listen without judgment, support survivors’ choices, and connect them to specialized services.
If you or someone you know may be experiencing domestic violence, help is available.
